The Region 4 Girls Tennis Tournament was played over the last couple of days at Pleasant Grove High School where the gals played some excellent tennis. With the majority of the players experiencing their first taste of varsity tennis this year were weren't quite sure what to expect in terms of wins and losses. The ladies played some excellent tennis all the way around and as a team qualified 4 of the 5 positions for state next week!
In 1st Singles Olivia Peterson played some of her best tennis at the tournament and lost a well fought match, just missing out on going to state 6-4 in the 3rd set. She improved her play each match this season and nearly pulled off a big upset to qualify for state in only her 1st year of playing varsity. Each of the gals she faced this season not only had multiple years of varsity experience, but have all played number 1 on their teams previously. Great job Olive!
In 2nd Singles Madi Flinders pulled off probably the biggest upset of the tournament by defeating a great player from PG in another tight 3 setter. Her opponent had already beaten her early this season 6-4, 6-1 so on paper it seemed unlikely that Madi would qualify for state. She ended up taking her to 3 sets and defeating her 6-3 in the final set to qualify for state! Her match consisted of long rallies and great defensive play.
In 3rd Singles Ellen Merrill celebrated her 17th birthday with a decisive victory over Westlake to qualify for her first state tournament in only her first year of playing varsity tennis. She played some excellent tennis and saved her best stuff for the region tournament.
1st Doubles pitted Kate Roper and Andrea Jex against a tough team from Lone Peak in the finals of that bracket. Although they played well they fell in the finals but secured the number 2 seed into the state tourney next week giving themselves a great shot and doing some damage there. This will be the third straight year that Kate and Andrea have qualified for the state tournament as a duo, great job gals.
In 2nd Doubles another pair of seniors teamed up to qualify in the 3rd position for state. Haley Sabin and Anna Finch went 3 - 1 in the tournament and ended up defeating some quality teams to earn their own state berth.
The gals played great so if you see them give them a high five, they've earned it. With 5 of our 7 gals playing varsity for the first time this year it is exciting to have them play the way they did.
