How DO I Become a Great Player?
Many people fall in love with tennis but don't know where to go from there. If you love playing, here's some best practices to become the best possible player.
1. Learn the basics the RIGHT way. Fundamentals are essential . . . too often people learn the wrong way and it takes a lot of time and hard work to break bad habits and teach the correct ones.
2. Practice makes perfect. Once you've got the fundamentals down, you've got to put the time in. 10,000 hours is what studies have shown is needed to become an "expert" at something. There's not substitute for court time.
3. Many players leave the practice court feeling like they've arrived . . . that is until they play a competitive match where people are watching. Playing in a competitive environment with pressure is the true test for a tennis player. Many players are "practice gangsters", someone who hits really well in practice but folds under pressure during an actual match that counts. The only way to get better at this is to play meaning matches, tournament matches with people watching. USTA tournaments are the best for this as the elite players play in these tourney's.

4. Use video to break down strokes & technique. Coach's Eye and many other apps are helpful to analyze strokes in slow motion.
